I think you will agree with me that Diljit Dosanjh is one of the friendliest actors working today. He has this simplicity and sweetness that connects if he is playing a superhero or a cop. His comic moment is impeccable and there is an inherent honesty, a lack of artifice that connects with the viewer. But even Diljit can’t save the train crash that is Arjun Patiala.

They design the movie as a parody. The framing device is a scriptwriter who tells his script to one of those old-school producers, who wears a white and gold safari outfit. The filmmaker is played by Abhishek Banerjee, whom you may remember as Stree’s unfortunate friend. The producer is played by Pankaj Tripathi. These initial minutes are the best in the movie. At one point, the producer asks if Sunny Leone will make an appearance. And behold, Sunny Leone appears as a character. This goal, self-conscious, movie within a movie could have been fun. But director Rohit Jugraj and writers Ritesh Shah and Sandeep Leyzell have created a careless disaster. Honestly, sometimes I had no idea what was going on. These villains are fighting each other, there is a corrupt MLA and a clueless and tasteless television journalist played by Kriti Sanon

Varun Sharma as hero ka dost tries to instill some enthusiasm as the hero’s partner. And, the action is full of emojis, graphics and develops like a video game. All of which could have worked better if the comedy were sharper and the plot was not so incoherent.

Ritesh has won multiple awards for writing movies like Pink and D-Day. Rohit has created successes with Diljit like Sardaar Ji and Sardaar Ji 2. But here, both seem to have deeply frozen their talent and worked in a coma. Speaking of deep freezing, there is this sequence in Arjun Patiala in which Seema Pahwa and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub are trapped in a freezer. They emerge with erect hair because they are just icicles: it is frozen. My heart was with them.

These are two of our best artists reduced to jesters. Arjun Patiala could not have been fun, even at the script level. So how and why was it done? In the beginning, the producer says he has spent decades making movies but has never heard a script. I suspect something like this happened with this movie. No matter how low your level, Arjun Patiala will not reach it. Making movies is hard work and I always try to find something to recommend in each movie. The only advantage here is that it is short.
